In Eabamatoong, the unemployment rate hovers around 75%. A large portion of the population is under 25, foreshadowing more crises if employment issues are ignored. Unemployment is a critical issue in the majority of Canada's First Nations communities. And yet, despite the pervasive financial poverty, the land in the Far North is rich with precious and industrial metals. Mining has the potential to create good jobs and prevent an exodus of youth. For the North to be developed sustainably, First Nations leaders, industry and government must come together.
